In 1937, a young mechanic from Quebec invented a “snow vehicle”, a 7-passenger B7 snowmobile that kicked off Bombardier’s success. Over time, Bombardier expanded into different types of snow vehicles. This ultimately created the iconic Ski-Doo personal snowmobile in 1959, which launched an entirely new industry.
Under the leadership of Laurent Beaudoin from 1966 on, Bombardier went public. A major turning point came in the 1970s after the oil crisis forced cuts in snowmobile production. The company doubled down on rail technology, applying its manufacturing know-how. Winning major subway car contracts for Montreal and New York City established Bombardier as a rail transit leader in North America.
Bombardier made its first big move into aerospace in 1986 by acquiring Canadair, well-known for its Challenger business jets and CL-215 firefighting aircraft. The Challenger jets kept improving through continuous upgrades, becoming a top choice for corporate flyers. Building on the CL-215, Bombardier launched the 415 amphibious aircraft in 1994 specifically designed for aerial firefighting.
Bombardier entered the regional jet market in 1989 with its transformative 50-seat Canadair Regional Jet program. Certified in 1992, these jets revolutionized regional travel by connecting smaller cities to hubs, making air travel more accessible. Larger versions followed, making this the world’s most successful regional jet family. Other major acquisitions like Learjet in 1990 and de Havilland in 1992 allowed Bombardier to become a leader across business, private, regional, and utility aircraft segments through continuous improvement.

Bombardier Global 6000 Models
The following include aircraft within the Bombardier Global 6000 series:
Global 5000
Making a total of 221 Global 5000s with about 218 in operation, Bombardier’s Global 5000 is an ultra-long-range, wide-body business jet known for its short takeoff and landing abilities. This slightly smaller and faster Global Express variant took its first flight in March 2003 and received FAA and JAA certification in October 2004.
In 2008, Bombardier increased its certified gross weight, enhancing fuel capacity, and maximum range. The Global 5000’s cabin is divided into 3 zones with an optional rear stateroom featuring a spacious galley, forward and AFT lavatories, and a large baggage compartment.
Global Express BD700
Announced in October 1991, Bombardier rolled out the Global Express in August 1996. This aircraft took its first flight in October 1996, completed its certifications in 1998, and made initial deliveries in 1999. Bombardier delivered 148 BD-700s from 1999 to 2005 before being superseded by the Global Express XRS (now Global 6000). The Global Express BD-700 is the first in its series of ultra-long-range corporate jets.
The Global Express’s twin-engine design features a larger, quieter cabin than the 5000, with higher cruise speeds and superior airport performance. It also features a supercritical wing with winglets and a T-tail – using metal construction with composite materials for fairings and flight control surfaces.
Global Express XRS BD 700-1A10
Introduced by Bombardier in 2005, the Global Express XRS is the third ultra-long-range, large-cabin business jet model. This aircraft variant entered service in 2004 with production stopping completely in 2012. A total of 163 Global Express XRS jets were manufactured. After rebranding in 2011, the Global Express XRS became the Global 6000.
Global 6000
After rebranding the Global Express XRS, Bombardier’s newer Global 6000s were equipped with 2 BMW/Rolls-Royce BR-710 turbofan engines and a Honeywell Primus 2000 XP glass cockpit suite. Additional avionics include:
- An automatic flight control system
- Dual flight management systems
- Traffic Alert and Collision Avoidance System (TCAS) II
- An electronic ground-proximity warning system
Global 5500
The Global 5500 launched in 2018 at the European Business Aviation Convention & Exhibition (EBACE) featuring an additional range of 200 nautical miles using both Rolls-Royce Pearl engines and the aircraft’s clean-sheet wing design – all without requiring extra fuel capacity. The Global 5500’s extended range allows it to fly nonstop from Western Europe to the West Coast of the United States.
Interior updates include a Nuage chaise lounge chair that converts into a flat surface for sleeping or banquet-style seating. Bombardier also introduces its l’Opera sound system that uses speakers in the cabin sidewalls and woofers in the bulkheads for a surround-sound experience.
Global 6500
The Global 6500 took its first flight on January 31, 2018, and received type certification in September 2019 from Transport Canada. This aircraft later received FAA certification in December 2019. With room for up to 17 passengers, the Global 6500 also has a luxurious cabin, a top speed of Mach 0.90, and an ultra-long range for optimal comfort and performance.
